The Department of ESHD has a rich history, inextricably linked with the history of the institute itself. Initially, the department was called the Department of Marxism-Leninism, which taught such disciplines as the history of the CPSU, political economy, philosophy and scientific communism. Later in 1978, the Department of Marxism-Leninism was divided into 2 general institute departments: the Department of the History of the CPSU and Political Economy and the Department of Philosophy and Scientific Communism.
With the beginning of reformation, the Department of Philosophy and Scientific Communism was renamed the Department of Problems of the Theory of Modern Socialism, Philosophy and Sociology, and then the Department of Philosophy, History, and Sociology. In the 2004-2005 academic year, the department received its new name - "social and humanitarian disciplines."
In 2009, there was a reorganization of the departments of the RII. Jurisprudence disciplines from the Department of Economic Theory and Law were transferred to the SHD. In 2012, on the orders of the rector, the SHD department merged with the departments of Kazakh and foreign languages (KFL) and physical education (FE) while retaining the name of the SHD department. In 2013, the department of SHD was renamed the department of “History of Kazakhstan and social and humanitarian disciplines”, and in 2017 the department received its current name “Engineering and social and humanitarian disciplines”
